One of the questions I get asked the most by other freelance designers is how do I find clients? More specifically, how do I attract my first clients?
While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, I do have loads of input on this juicy topic. If you’re looking for the short answer of how I attracted my first “ideal” clients for Spruce Rd., I’ll tell you it was through my blog. But I hear ya over there rolling your eyes, exhausted by that response to gaining clients for your business! I get it — blogging isn’t for everyone, and it honestly is not the easiest solution. It requires an enormous amount of focus + time crafting content and slinging words around.
As we enter the new year, I am more than ever excited by the services side of Spruce Rd. If you’re new to my nook of the internet, Spruce Rd. offers brand identity design services, but also classes + resources for our fellow freelance designer friends. My business is split 50/50 (both in time + profit) for these two income streams.
So what’s got me excited about this year for our clients?
Whelp, this year I’m holding myself accountable to testing the waters on new strategies of attracting clients. I’ll be honest and say that I’m not the best at pursuing that side of my business. I’ve been so grateful for the business that has come my way, but I’ve noticed that this is an area where I can get creative and improve.
We’re doing just fine numbers wise, but I can’t resist a creative challenge!
I’ve come across a few bloggers recently who have created a challenge for themselves, and shared the results in real time as it happened (ahem: Paper & Oats + Obststacle.co $500k challenge). I found myself so intrigued with the transparency and candid analytics of their challenges, so I’ve decided to do just the same for Spruce Rd.!
So, here’s the skinny on my personal monthly challenge (that I hope you join with me!).
The client challenge
- I will pursue a new client marketing strategy each month of 2017. These will be strategies that anyone can pursue (whether you have an existing online presence, or are just getting started).
- I will share the exact tactic that I used to those who want to peek behind the curtain. (lookout for a link to join below). This won’t be available to the public, only to your inbox!
- I will share the results — if there are any — from my monthly challenge. Maybe I’ll go all 12 months with a new strategy and never see results. But maybe I’ll find a strategy that sticks! Either way, I won’t consider it a failure.
I’ll admit I’m both super excited, and nervous, to take on this challenge. If anything else, it will hold me accountable and push me out of my comfort zone. Do you have any exciting goals/challenges you’re pursuing this year?
