I am starting a new column on the blog today—"designer spotlight"! I am excited to kickstart this series with the talented Jess Bruggink. I have been a follower and admirer of Jess' work for while now, and was eager to learn a bit more about her work. Jess has a unique aesthetic that marries her fine art + design background. Right now she is donating proceeds from her Etsy store to charity:water, so hop on over!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I currently work as a surface and product designer. My husband is also a designer so we spend A LOT of time creating and brain storming together. It's so nice to be able to talk about our projects and bounce ideas off of one another. We are in the process of remodeling our basement now and are having a ton of fun figuring out all the details.
Share a little about your work. What/who inspires you?
I think a defining feature of my work is that I combine fine art with more traditional graphic design. My work almost always has a handmade touch: an illustrated pattern, painted art work or hand drawn type.
I am super Inspired by anything bright and playful. I'm all about mix and match crazy patterns and I love finding and using unusual color palettes.
Do you have a favorite medium to use?
I use a lot of watercolor but also like experimenting with brush markers and acrylics. Lately I've been layering type on top of abstract paintings that I scan in.
What is next for you? Anything new in the works?
In the future I'll definitely be exploring more painting and fine art. I'd love to work with more clients where I can incorporate my passion for mixing art and design.
Just for fun - What is a current shop you have your eye on? Please share!
I'm really loving the shop Ship & Shape. The products are super fun and quirky yet the shop is a tightly curated mix of handmade goods. Plus they hail from my city - Minneapolis!
